Social media and other influences have increased our polarisation. On the political right, people complain of “us and them”, somehow in competition for resources and capital, where “them” typically refers to immigrants or to people who have a different appearance or language from “us”. On the political left, people complain of “us and them”, typically a tale of oppressors and oppressed, where “them” typically refers to the oppressor and “us” to those oppressed for their social status, skin colour, gender or other reasons.
We need to move away from these stories about “us” and “them”. There is only us. We are one species. We need to work together, collaborate and support each other. Synergy is preferable to dialectic. No-one ever started a war because the enemy was like us.
