the collective insanity of social media

Greta Thunberg and Extinction Rebellion shout about climate change being the greatest threat humans face. I disagree. The greatest threat humans face is social media. I grew up without this and have watched as it developed and became the dominant force in people’s lives that is now is. Walking around, people in the street look so physically sick and I have been wondering if the covid pandemic has ground people down and led to unhealthier lifestyles. Then I realized that it is all about social media. People get their teeth “fixed” for social media, men take steroids and build up their arm muscles for social media, women stop eating to get a thigh gap for social media, everyone has turned into a hunchback with rounded shoulders, forward head posture and a weak lower back because of staring at mobile phones. Vaccine hesitancy never used to be a phrase I heard, now the war for or against vaccines is dominated by social media, people get their news through social media, people get their opinions from social media, social media manipulates society, social media has brought us a post-truth world, no-one seems to care about anything anymore except for their social media profiles. At concerts, people make photos and short videos to post on social media and don’t enjoy the concert any more. On vacation, people look for the best photos for their social media pages. In the gym or doing exercise, people look for the yoga poses which will be more extreme and look cooler on social media, forgetting about their own health. The fight against climate change takes place on social media. The craziness in the USA and California in particular regarding multitudes of gender, pronouns, lesbian dance theory and other fringe ways of looking at the world spreads through social media. Reasonable people are frightened to openly state reasonable opinions in case they are attacked and demonized in social media. Where I live, kids protest in the street about Black Lives Matter and the police killing African-Americans, even though they live in a country with highly professional police and where racism is typically against Eastern European immigrant families rather than those coming from Africa. Social media opinion is manipulated by some crazy individuals, small interest groups, business groups, internet giants, governments, fringe groups, counter-intelligence agencies, religious groups and so on. The world has become collectively insane though an obsession with social media. I think this is a bigger threat than global warming.
