Swiss National Day

The first of August is Swiss National Day, when Swiss people take a day off from their busy bee working habits and relax with family.  In the evening there are fireworks to celebrate.  Actually they do have something to celebrate, even if they do it in a restrained and slightly boring way.  The Swiss confederation is a success, a model of democracy as it should be, and a happy blending of different cultures and languages.  It is a pleasure to live here.  Doubly so in a Europe struggling with debt, problems with the Euro, unemployment, and countless social problems.  Switzerland is a land-locked island in the centre of all this, calmly ignoring everyone else’s problems and quietly getting on with things.
