During the recent pandemic there was fully remote work, where possible, followed by a worker shortage where workers could call the shots and had leverage to stay in home office. Now there is a financial crisis and layoffs so employers can again call the shots and mandate a return to the office, or at least more days per week in the office.

Employers want more work from employees. Employees (maybe not all but many of them) want more money from their employers. This means that both have a motivation for longer hours. These are key reasons why we still work relatively long hours despite increases in efficiency and automation of production. Employees will even devise unnecessary work as it means getting paid more.

I still think that greed and ambition will mean that the future of work (in about ten years time) is maybe four days per week in the office, one day in home office every week, plus additional work at home on evenings, weekends and during holidays. This will allow employers to squeeze more work out of employees and will allow employees to work more, either for extra pay through overtime or for higher salary through promotion. This may be a pessimistic view but automation and high efficiency production did not lead to a 20 or 30 hour working week as predicted by optimists between the first and second world wars.
